Essential business skills required

Understanding Financials

Understanding how to manage your finances is one of the most important aspects of owning and running a business, and that is why it is listed here first in the business skills required.

Reviewing your profit and loss statement, forecasting cash flow projections, creating sales targets and budgets, as well as watching relevant ratios such as gross profit, cost of goods, wages, and net profit is critical to the success of your business. Having sound financial management skills will help you to run your business profitably and protect your financial investment.

It is recommended that you review your finances once a month by checking your cash flow, profit and loss statement and budgets versus actuals. That way, you are on top of your current situation, make changes if required, and promptly identify any areas of concern.

Business Planning

Planning in a business helps give your business direction and allows you to think forward, understand your business’s current position, and think about how you will do the next step to reach the next milestone.  An old saying goes like this “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”.

A business plan helps you set goals for your business and plan how you will reach them. The more planning you do, the likelihood of the business running smoother is high.
